Bloodline is a mid-career retrospective monograph for the Canadian artist Meryl McMaster, widely acclaimed for her photographic works reflecting her mixed Plains Cree, Métis, British, and Dutch ancestry. Throughout the book, the colour red symbolizes the significance of the artist’s family lineage. Tactile details, such as book cloth wrapping the spine and uncoated paper used as section dividers, echo the materials depicted in McMaster’s photographs. A red glow emanates from the center of spreads containing text, subtly reminding readers of the ancestral spirits that inspire the artist. Drawing inspiration from the book’s design, the publisher and curator decided on the title for the book and the accompanying exhibition: Bloodline.
The limited edition, consisting of only 100 copies, is presented in a clamshell box, individually hand-painted and numbered by McMaster. Each limited edition copy features a red cloth-bound book with a tipped-in photo, accompanied by a signed print enclosed in a letterpress-printed archival envelope.
