The Invitational is a contemporary pop-up art exhibition that brought together six leading galleries from Toronto and New York. In its inaugural year, The Invitational spotlighted New York—a city renowned for its artists, galleries, and museums. The exhibition marked a unique occasion whereby four galleries from New York have ventured north to exhibit with some of the most exciting young galleries in Toronto. Over 50 artworks by 30 internationally recognized artists, a number of whom have never before exhibited in Canada, were on view. Spanning nearly 12,000 square feet across two floors, the exhibition was hosted in a remarkable space that formerly housed the Bright Pearl Restaurant, a culinary landmark in the city, located at 346 Spadina Avenue.
The Office of Gilbert Li developed the identity for the pop-up exhibition. An empty, sealed letterpress envelope was used as the hero marketing and promotional material. The envelope was photographed and used for the evite, while the physical envelopes were left all over the city to announce the event. Additional materials designed included: posters, social media assets, press release, object labels, outdoor vinyl signage, directional, as well as washroom signage.
