BRIAN JUNGEN FRIENDSHIP CENTRE
In the summer of 2019, the Art Gallery of Ontario exhibited Brian Jungen Friendship Centre in which the artist transformed the gallery into a gymnasium. This was the largest exhibition of the acclaimed artist’s work to date. The Office of Gilbert Li designed the 224-page book that accompanied the exhibition. The book includes over 80 works: sculptures, drawings, and film stills along with a selection of archival materials including private photographs, images of the artist working, unrealized works, and research. The text includes an interview with the artist, an essay by Kitty Scott as well as a detailed timeline that rounds out this generously illustrated book. The book details Jungen’s deep material explorations which highlight a long history of inequality, a concern for the environment, and a profound commitment to Indigenous ways of knowing and making.
